President Goodluck JonathanIn a bid to reduce the number of out-of-school children in the North, President Goodluck Jonathan will tomorrow commission an almajiri model school in Sokoto.
During his election campaign last year, Jonathan had promised to embark on massive construction of Almajiri schools to resolve the challenge posed by the ubiquitous nature of almajirai which has led to insecurity and other social challenges to the country.
With funds provided through the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund), Jonathan had pledged to deliver 100 fully completed schools for almajirai across the 19 Northern states by June this year.
This, he had said, is part of the 400 schools for the street kids that will be completed in the first phase of the programme.
Of these, two schools would be commissioned tomorrow by Jonathan in Sokoto, with the Model One accommodating 200 pupils.
This school has hostels and other basic facilities to promote the learning of Islamic religious knowledge and Western education.
The second model will accommodate fifty pupils, with all required facilities for teaching and learning of Islamic and Western education curricula.
The fundamental difference between the two is that while Model 2 is patterned towards catering for almajirai from small holder groups of Malams who house the kids in their homes, Model 1 attracts children from different communities around its location.
