PDP Convention: Makarfi Urged to Dump ‘Unity List’

The Senator Ahmed Makarfi-led National Caretaker Committee of the PDP has been advised to give room for all contestants to face delegates during its December 9 national convention to avoid throwing the party into more crises.
Various sources within the party said some names had been pencilled down from the six geopolitical zones in what they called “Unity List,” to be favoured ahead of others in clear violation of the spirit of fair play.
One of the sources, an aspirant for one of the leading offices, said if the planned imposition of candidates was allowed to take place, the PDP would be left with more crisis than what it contended with before the Supreme Court judgement.
He said the idea of having a unity list indicated that the PDP was still promoting impunity, lack of internal democracy and had not learnt from its past mistakes.
The aggrieved aspirant reminded that Makarfi had once apologised to members of the party for the impunity that once took the centre stage in the party.
Another aspirant, who is a lady, said the caretaker committee should allow the contestants to be elected on their individual merit rather than being handpicked by some godfathers.
Those opposed to the unity list had threatened to leave the party to pursue their political aspirations.
