A university in the United Arab Emirate (UAE) has defeated top universities in the US and the UK to become the world largest international university, as the higher institution with the most international students.
A recent report published by leading education ranking body, Times Higher Education, shows that the university, American University of Sharjah, has 83.7 per cent foreign students.
No African university was listed in the 200 top international universities, even though Africans constitute a sizable percentage of foreign students in the ranked universities.
Central European University, Hungary, was 2rd with 77.4 per cent, while London School of Economics and Political Science came 3rd with 70 per cent international students.
Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland, University of Luxemburg, University of London (Soas) and École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne in Switzerland, were 4th, 5th, 6th, and 7th with 62.3%, 54.8%, 54.3% and 54.2% respectively.
In the 8th 9th and 10th positions were universities all in London; Imperial College London, University of London, City and University College London respectively, with about half of their entire students being foreigners.
“Not one US university in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2015-16 has more than 35 per cent international students, contrasting with institutions in Asia, Oceania and Europe,” the report said.
“An analysis of universities in the rankings shows that 16 of the 30 universities with the highest percentage of international students are in the UK, seven are elsewhere in Europe and four are in Australia or New Zealand.
“This may well come as a surprise, since the US has long been a popular destination for teenagers looking to study abroad.
“The US was home to more than 800,000 foreign students in 2013-14, but it seems that overseas students spread themselves relatively thinly across different institutions,” it added.
Although the Arab university came top in the list of universities with highest foreign students, Oxford University emerged overall best university in the world.
